EU may extend protection for Ukrainian refugees beyond 2027
The European Commission is discussing with EU member states the future status of Ukrainians once the temporary protection measures expire in March 2027.
It is reported that the European Union is preparing to adopt a single decision regarding the status of Ukrainians in the EU.
🔹 All possible options are being considered, including:
➖ Extending temporary protection until March 2028, taking into account the fact that the war in Ukraine is still ongoing
➖ Switching Ukrainians to standard residence permits
➖ Creation of a new special status The European Commission is expected to prepare a concrete proposal by the end of May 2026.
It will then be formally considered by representatives of the Member States in Brussels.
Consequently, the future course of events depends, in particular, on the development of the war in Ukraine and the willingness of EU countries to integrate Ukrainians into long-term residence schemes.
